You’ve been cruising the Internet looking for that song you want to sing or play to. You find it, but its something called “MIDI” and when you play it, the sound is, uh...cheesy! And you can’t copy it to CD! It doesn’t have to be that way…
MIDI is short for “Musical Instrument Digital Interface” and is a protocol that’s been around for a long long time. Before computers were fast enough to handle regular audio, it was a way to have the computer “control” a keyboard or synthesizer and make it play a song with multiple instruments. Instead of bringing the audio it just took the information in as bits, and spit it back to an instrument as bits. It allowed musicians to record and edit all to the computer! Ah, the 80’s….
MIDI is still going strong today. Sure, there are other technologies that trump it, but it’s so simple and universal it might never go away. The great news is for the last 20 or so years, musicians have been creating millions of tracks with it. Odds are if it was popular, there’s a MIDI backing track somewhere, many times they are free for the downloading!
So, why the “cheesy” sound? Remember, the MIDI file is just some bits telling the instruments what notes to play, when and how loud. If you are playing the file on the computer, you are probably using Windows Media Player or QuickTime’s virtual instruments, which just don’t have that “real” sound. Again, it doesn’t have to be this way!
